Just using the Surface, all 5 screens work beautifully, but when I RDP to my workstation, all I get is solid black screen on all 5 monitors. Is there some other limitation that keeps all 5 from working? The result works fine, but the instructions about editing it appear to be missing a small but crucial item…. The Tiny Hexer editor app refused to edit termsvr. I have a client with a desktop PC running Windows 10 Professional. When trying to RDP from a Windows 7 Professional machine, we are not able to use all of our monitors. Has anyone had this issue or can provide a solution?

Windows 7 Pro is capable of remoting to Windows 10 Pro and using multiple monitors. In fact, dual is just the beginning. I’ve personally remoted to Win 10 Pro using 4 on a Windows 7 Pro machine and got all 4 to work. You need to make sure Windows 7 has the updated Remote Desktop Connection client and you are checking the “Use all my monitors for the remote session” option under the Display tab of RDC. When using RDP you cannot see the local display as an output normally, It uses it’s own thing.

If you need to see the local display when remote connecting you can use a third party software to do so. Or you can make a shortcut with this in the front. This is a software incompatibility. Win7 does not have the ability to rdp with multiple monitors. I did find a small work around though.

I wrote a How-To on it. I do the same with some dual monitor PCs. ScotM is correct – you just need the “Use all monitors for the remote session” and have the latest RDC client on Win 7 machine.
